Christian Dior was born January 21, 1905, in Granville, Normandy, a seaside town off the coast of France. Christian Dior grew up surrounded by architectural museums and art galleries and went on to study political science at the Ecole des Sciences Politiques from 1920 to 1925. Christian Dior wanted only to be involved in the arts and to make money, During his early years, he sold his fashion sketches on the streets for 10 cents each. After leaving school Christian Dior received money from his father so that in 1928 he could open a small art gallery, where he sold art by the likes of Pablo Picasso and Max Jacob. But shortly after a family financial disaster his father lost his business, and Christian Dior was forced to close the gallery.
In 1939, During World War II, Christian Dior was one of many who were deployed by the French army and during this time he dressed the wives of the Nazi officers and French collaborators. In 1945, backed by Marcel Boussac, he went into business for himself, the name of his line was Corolle, but the phrase New Look was coined for it by Carmel Snow, the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar and the “New Look” revolutionized women’s dress and reestablished France and Paris, as the center of the fashion world. Christian Dior’s career as one of the worlds top fashion designers spanned across a 10 year period, he died in 1957, but despite his passing, the house of Dior continues to live strong and has remained world famous.
